This week, we’ve got a full hour on the 2016 Emmy Awards, and we’re pretty thrilled to be speaking about all the television we love so much. The ceremony will be broadcast on September 18, 2016 on ABC, and we are excited to see who takes home the big prizes (and many of the small prizes as well). If you want to hear more of our preliminary thoughts on the nominations (we did a segment on them back in our Ghostbusters episode) check that out here. In the first half of this episode, we talk a little about the function of the Emmys, especially in the glorious age of Peak TV that we are happy to be living in. We talk about the curious case of the Lauren Graham Rule and what it did (and didn’t do) for underdog nominees. Both Jeff and I have reservations about Jimmy Kimmel as this year’s host, and fingers are crossed that he will bring a different style of humour than that evidenced on either The Man Show, or Win Ben Stein’s Money, our super-current reference points for his work.
The Emmy Awards air this weekend on ABC, and in addition to our extensive thoughts on this year’s nominations, we thought it was time to recognize some of the good works that even the Academy didn’t want to honour. We did this for the Oscars, you may recall. While we’re looking forward to seeing rich, […]
This week we’re talking about Kubo and the Two Strings, a stop-motion film that blew both of us away. Kubo and the Two Strings comes to us from the studio Laika, who previously created Coraline, ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls. We did our best to not spoil anything from the plot of this movie, because we […]
The 49th San Diego Comic Con was held this weekend and, as with every year, all the biggest sci-fi, fantasy, superhero, and nerd-adjacent news dropped at the same time. It’s like Geek Christmas and I look forward to it every year. In honour of Comic Con, this week we’re doing a Monday Link Roundup to […]
We’re back! Apologies for the lack of podcast two weeks ago—audio issues meant we weren’t able to bring you our Tony Awards episode Luckily we’ve captured the spirit in this Tony Awards Chat. On to this week’s topics! With Game of Thrones and Veep both ending their seasons, we thought it was a great time […]
This episode we dive right into the summer reality TV show So You Think You Can Dance as it heads into its 12th season with a twist: the contestants are all kids this time. SYTYCD (as it is cumbersomely named) is a unique corner of reality television that has managed to bring awareness around the art […]
This week, we’re diving into Beyoncé’s world-changing visual album/way of life LEMONADE. Jeff and I are thrilled to be joined once again by guest panelist (and noted Beyoncé scholar) Taryn Cheal. Disclaimers first: we speak about “Beyoncé” and “Jay-Z” in the context of the work, and we are primarily talking about them as characters in […]
It’s never been a better time to love television. Gone are the days of waiting for the leaves to start falling to see new seasons of your favourite shows. Looking back on those days, it’s hard to imagine how we even survived. But now it’s 2016! We’ve reached and passed Peak TV and our cups […]
