This week marks the release of the 17th animated feature film from Pixar: Finding Dory. I am an unabashed Pixar fan, and while I tend to enjoy their original movies more than their sequels (don’t worry, I’m not talking about you Toy Story 3), I’ll admit to still having very high hopes for this one.
- Variety has ranked the 17 Pixar films from best to worst in a super scientific, totally non-subjective way (side note: how is it 2016 and we still don’t have a widely used punctuation mark that denotes sarcasm?). These lists are all over the internet but I do appreciate the inclusion of Finding Dory at number 10 on this list (between Monsters, Inc and Up).
- If you’re a fan of Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers series, be sure to check out their newest video on Finding Nemo.
- Some terrible human being intrepid video editor has shown us what Pixar movies would look like if they ended at the sad parts. Poor, poor Bing Bong.
- Youtube user Burger Fiction has been creating gigantic pop culture supercuts for a while now and I am here for all of them. This week they released one titled The Evolution of Pixar, which features scenes from Pixar’s long list of films and shorts. See how far computer animation has come in over 30 years.
- Speaking of shorts, their newest, Piper, is shown before Finding Dory. Business Insider interviewed the short’s director Alan Barillaro and it’s a nice behind-the-scenes look at the Pixar process.
- I’m always taken aback by just how long Pixar movies take to make. Here’s Ellen DeGeneres announcing the sequel way back in April of 2013.
- Finding Dory was released yesterday and it set a new box office record for an animated film preview. Is it possible that the two highest grossing films of the summer are going to be released by Disney this year? (Yes, of course that’s possible, why would you even ask that?)
- Film critic Germain Lussier reviewed Finding Dory and reports that the film delivers on “all the feels.” And really, what more could you ask from a Pixar film?
- Jimmy Kimmel brought together the cast of the film this week and spent most of the interview talking about their kids. My weird takeaway from this interview: I want all of their glasses. Those are some nice glasses.
- For a more negative take on the film, check out Rich Juzwiak’s review. The words “dreadfully annoying” come up.
- The trailer for Finding Dory sparked some controversy over apparently featuring a lesbian couple. “Featuring” doesn’t seem like the right word though, since they are really barely in it. Some have decided to boycott the film based on this, and to those people I ask, “you do know who the star of this movie is, yes?”
- The Advocate released a list of lesbian couples they wish were in the film. I’ll admit to wanting to see the further aquatic adventures of Carol and Therese.
