After months of trailers and TV spots, Captain America: Civil War is finally out in North America. Before we start the Link Roundup, if you’re feeling a little lost on where we are in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, don’t miss “Your Captain America: Civil War Study Guide.” Got that? Ready? Avengers…
- The first movie in the Captain America Trilogy features one of the best moments in the MCU so far. io9 has an interesting post this week comparing Steve’s heartbreaking goodbye to Peggy with a similar scene in a film called A Matter of Life and Death.
- Linda Holmes of NPR reviewed the new Cap movie and found a way to compare it to the Broadway juggernaut (not to be confused with the X-Men villain, Juggernaut) Hamilton. Holmes has consistently been one of the most insightful commentators when it comes to the Marvel movies (and television…and Cinderella…and, well just about everything). Check out her posts on Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Solider for more. These posts of hers specifically are must-reads in the lead up to Civil War.
- Speaking of Linda Holmes, last night she hosted an event at The Smithsonian with directors and brothers Joe and Anthony Russo to discuss the new movie. So far there’s no word on whether or not the talk will be put online but you can see the Twitter conversation here (including the news they dropped that Captain Marvel will be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War). (UPDATE – MAY 12: Part of the interview is featured in the new episode of Pop Culture Happy Hour on Captain America: Civil War.)
- In case you’re still on the fence about whether or not you’ll see this new movie, perhaps the fact that it currently has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes will change your mind. This makes me very happy as I was so hoping this movie would live up to my expectations.
- Like they did for Batman and Superman, The A.V. Club put together a retrospective on the history of Captain America and Iron Man fighting each other.
- The Hollywood Reporter has a very interesting profile on David Maisel. Never heard of him? You’re not alone! Maisel left Marvel Studios years ago but was instrumental in setting up the shared universe franchise that other studios are now trying to emulate.
- I love this article from Vulture on the Russo brothers’ approach to fitting within the Marvel Studio model of film making. Check it out if you’re at all curious about how they managed to go from directing episodes of Arrested Development and Community to Disney’s biggest summer tentpole releases.
- Captain America: Civil War features our first glimpse of Black Panther and his home, the fictional African nation of Wakanda, which means we are also hearing the Wakandan language for the first time. Entertainment Weekly talked to the Russo brothers about their use of the language Xhosa. If you’re curious what Xhosa sounds like (and you can’t wait until you just watch T’Challa using it in the movie) here’s a video of Trevor Noah speaking it on QI.
- The cast of Captain America: Civil War has been in full movie promotion mode for the last couple weeks. One of their stranger endeavors is this video of them humming The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Let me just say, American Exceptionalism looks good on Mr. Evans.
- And last, but not least, here’s Chris Evans pouring ice water down his pants. You’re welcome.
