This week, we’re thrilled to welcome our first guest panelist, Taryn Cheal, as we dive into the high-heeled, drama-fueled, talent-heavy RuPaul’s Drag Race aka one of the only reality shows still worth your time. Lauren is our Pop Cult Leader this week, and she takes Jeff through what the show is, why we should watch it, and then Taryn gives a look at the new season (premiering March 7 on Logo). If you want to know what the old crown looks like, check this puppy out. It’s huge.
We pick our favourite (if likely doomed, based on past results) queens for the season based on name alone. All hail Dax Exclamation Point, Robbie Turner, and Bob The Drag Queen.
In our second segment, we debut a game dubbed “What Did You Just Call Me?” where Taryn and Jeff have to guess which famous person has the odd given name Lauren dug up. Maurice Mickelwhite is an Academy Award-winning actor, in one great example. As a group, we all show a certain foolishness in regards to U.S. history, and Lauren takes a particularly tough blow to her image as a smart human being.
We close the show with our Pop Culture Kool-Aid Picks of the week, with Jeff strongly urging us all to check out the films nominated for the Best Animated Short Oscar, and particularly wants people to see Don Hertzfeldt’s World of Tomorrow (see the trailer here). Taryn is diggin’ the Judge John Hodgman podcast, in all its sadvent-y glory. Also check out the gerbils one, the Shut Your Pious Hole one, and the one with Alton Brown. And finally, Lauren is drinking in the weird sport of curling, which just crowned a new women’s Canadian champion. Special shout out to Callan Hamon of Team Saskatchewan, whose sister Lauren knows, NBD. If you want to check out the men’s side, it’s coming up next week.
